FROM FOUNDATION TO BALANCE

With the foundation in place, I begin adding purposeful variety.

Foundation introduced the first four formulas. Balance builds on that beginning with more variety, while I continue observing how each dog responds.
In formulas five through eight, I introduce a wider variety of proteins, vegetables, sprouted legumes, quinoa, greens and marine omega-3s. Each recipe adds something different to the rotation.
What I have learned:  It is not only which ingredients I use. It is their proportions, how I prepare them and how the individual dog responds throughout the rotation.
WHAT BALANCE INTRODUCES

More color. More variety. New information.

Lean proteins

Bison, turkey, chicken and salmon broaden the protein rotation.

Greens and plants

Kale, chard, green beans, beets and Brussels sprouts add diverse plant nutrients.

Purposeful preparation

Some vegetables are steamed; others are finely blended according to their role in the formula.

Observe and adjust

Each formula gives us another opportunity to watch digestion, comfort, energy, skin and coat.
THE BALANCE COLLECTION

Formulas five through eight continue the journey.

Balance introduces purposeful variety through four formulas, each created to contribute something different to the rotation.
Heart, kidney and digestive support

Wild Bison & Beets

Wild Bison & Beets begins Balance with a lean red meat protein, carefully proportioned organ meat, steamed vegetables, dandelion leaf and sprouted legumes.

I designed this formula for feeding plans that may require thoughtful cardiovascular, kidney, pancreatic or EPI nutritional support.
Inside the formula
Lean wild bison, a small amount of beef liver, Diestel turkey thigh, steamed beets, Brussels sprouts, dandelion leaf, sprouted kidney beans and Anasazi beans.
Nutrient highlights
Bison contributes protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12. Brussels sprouts contribute vitamin C, vitamin K, folate and fiber; beets add folate, manganese and colorful plant compounds.

Vitamin rich balance

Turkey & Quinoa

Developed to bring a wider range of plant nutrients into the journey, with raw kale broken down finely so its cell structure is opened before feeding.
Why it is here
I use finely blended kale for its vitamin C and other antioxidants. Our homemade applesauce with cinnamon is included as part of my digestive support approach.
Inside the formula
Diestel turkey thighs, organic white quinoa from Bolivia, finely blended dinosaur kale, homemade applesauce with cinnamon, sweet potato mash and steamed carrots.
Nutrient highlights

A lighter green formula

Chicken & Greens

One of two newer Balance formulas created to bring more greens and chlorophyll rich plants into the rotation.
Why it is here
I created this as a lower fat formula for nutritional plans involving kidney or pancreatic sensitivity. Its suitability still depends on the individual dog and complete nutrient analysis.
Inside the formula
Whole body chicken, red potatoes with skin, green beans, rainbow chard and stock made from the chicken bones.
Nutrient highlights
Chicken supplies high quality protein. Chard and green beans contribute fiber and plant nutrients, while the complete recipe is proportioned for the intended formula.

Why it is here
Designed to add protein variety and omega-3 fatty acids to support normal skin, coat, inflammatory response and cardiovascular function.
Inside the formula
Wild Alaskan salmon with red potatoes, green beans, rainbow chard and the Balance greens preparation.
Nutrient highlights
Salmon naturally supplies EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids along with protein, vitamin B12, selenium and vitamin D.

THE STORY OF FORMULA FIVE

Wild Bison & Beets began with one dog’s cardiovascular journey.

In 2015, a client came to me after her dog was diagnosed by UC Davis with cardiovascular disease. I worked with the UC Davis nutritional department to create Wild Bison & Beets for that dog’s nutritional needs. She is still my client today.

I combine lean bison with a small amount of beef liver and Diestel turkey thigh. I add steamed beets and Brussels sprouts for colorful plant nutrients, along with dandelion leaf and sprouted kidney and Anasazi beans. I selected these ingredients as part of my nutritional approach; this formula is not a substitute for veterinary treatment.

AFTER EIGHT FORMULAS

Notice what has changed.

After completing Foundation and Balance, observe your dog’s energy, eyes, hearing, breath, paws, coat and digestion.

During the rotation, gently wipe the paws, around the eyes and over the coat each night with a clean, damp washcloth. In my experience, early discharge or staining may lessen as the dog adjusts. I consider recurring eye discharge or tear staining a possible sign that the protein level or overall proportions should be reviewed. Because these symptoms can have other causes, persistent or uncomfortable eye problems should also be evaluated by a veterinarian.
