Renewal continues the rotation with four sweet potato recipes.
WHY I CREATED RENEWAL

A new generation of dogs needed something different.

After nearly ten years of feeding dogs and showing families how important diet is, a new client base began coming to Shinto’s: puppies and younger dogs with greater calorie needs.
I created the Renewal formulas with additional carbohydrates and richer proteins to meet those needs. I also wanted a simple, limited ingredient rotation that would help us observe each dog’s response to individual proteins and purposeful organ meats.
My common sense approach I use these outward changes as information about how a dog may be responding to its food. They guide what we try next and when the proportions may need to change.
THE RENEWAL STRUCTURE

Four proteins. A sweet potato base.

More energy

Sweet potato and richer proteins increase the calorie and carbohydrate content for puppies, younger dogs and active dogs.

Clearer observation

A limited ingredient structure helps us compare how the dog responds as each protein is introduced.

Purposeful organs

Kidney and spleen bring concentrated nutrients into specific formulas instead of every meal.

Complete the circle

After formula twelve, we return to Foundation with everything the journey has taught us.
THE RENEWAL COLLECTION

Formulas nine through twelve complete the journey.

Use the formulas weekly or rotate every two or three days according to your dog’s feeding plan.
Whole animal nourishment

Duck & Sweet Potato

I call this Buddhist Duck because we honor and use the entire animal. The meat goes into the formula, while the head and feet are used for treats and bone marrow stock.
Why it is here
Duck is primarily dark meat. It brings more naturally occurring fat, calories and amino acids into the rotation for puppies, younger dogs and dogs with greater energy needs.
Inside the formula
Whole duck, organic steamed sweet potato mash and a small amount of organic split peas.
Nutrient highlights
Duck contributes complete protein, essential amino acids, iron, zinc, selenium and B vitamins. Split peas contribute plant protein, fiber, folate, iron, potassium and magnesium.

Richness, marrow and collagen

Lamb & Sweet Potato

This formula introduces Australian pasture raised lamb while keeping the same simple Renewal structure.
Why it is here
I cook the lamb with the shank so the broth carries the natural richness of the bone, marrow and connective tissue into the formula.
Inside the formula
Australian pasture raised lamb, organic steamed sweet potato mash and organic split peas.
Nutrient highlights
Lamb contributes complete protein, iron, zinc and vitamin B12. The shank and connective tissue add naturally occurring collagen building amino acids.

Marine fats with kidney

Wild Salmon & Sweet Potato

Wild salmon changes the protein and fat profile again, bringing naturally occurring marine omega-3s into the sweet potato rotation.
Why it is here
I add beef kidney here with intention. Organ meats are concentrated, so I rotate them rather than placing the same organs in every meal.
Inside the formula
Wild salmon, organic steamed sweet potato mash, organic split peas and beef kidney.
Nutrient highlights
Salmon contributes EPA and DHA omega-3s, protein, vitamin B12, selenium and vitamin D. Beef kidney is especially rich in vitamin B12, selenium and riboflavin, with iron and other B vitamins.

The final formula

Humanely Raised Pork & Sweet Potato

Humanely raised pork completes the 12 formula journey. It returns to the simple sweet potato and split pea structure while introducing beef spleen as the final organ meat.
Why it is here
In Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese food philosophies, organs hold special value within a whole animal diet. I carry that philosophy into the final formula by using beef spleen in a small, purposeful amount.
Inside the formula
Humanely raised pork, organic steamed sweet potato mash, organic split peas and beef spleen.
Nutrient highlights
Pork contributes protein, thiamin and other B vitamins. Beef spleen is notably rich in iron and vitamin B12 and also contributes selenium and protein.

ORGANS WITH INTENTION

Kidney and spleen each bring something different.

Beef kidney contributes vitamin B12, selenium, riboflavin, iron and other B vitamins. Beef spleen is especially rich in iron and vitamin B12 and also contributes selenium and protein.

Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese food philosophies have long valued organs in relation to the body. That whole animal thinking influences how I rotate kidney and spleen in small, purposeful amounts instead of putting every organ into every meal.

WHY ORGANIC SPLIT PEAS?

It is the proportion and purpose that matter.

I use a small amount of organic split peas for plant protein, fiber, folate, iron, potassium and magnesium. They complement the animal protein; they do not replace it.

I do not judge an ingredient by a trend or headline. I look at its quality, how much is used, what surrounds it and the role it plays in the complete formula.

THE FINAL LEG OF THE JOURNEY

Take pictures. Notice the changes. Share what you learn.

Move through each formula weekly or every two or three days according to your dog’s plan. Photograph the eyes, paws and coat, and keep notes on energy, appetite, digestion, breath and comfort. I created these formulas one by one over 15 years from real dogs, real families and the information each animal gave me, not to follow a trend.
